思源论坛02期 Panel Discussion – Job Search, Start-up, and MBA Application

思源论坛02期活动于2012年5月20日在麻省理工学院举办!
Cambridge, MA –Second Siyuan Forum event was successfully held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology by SJTU alumni association of greater Boston area on May 20th, 2012.

第二期活动是以panel discussion的形式举行,可谓是牛人如云。上海交通大学波士顿校友会邀请了来自上海交大,北京大学,加州大学伯克利分校, 浙江大学和哈尔冰工业大学的校友,他(她)们现在都在波士顿地区工作和学习,与在场的朋友们分享了他们的工作,生活体验。
Coming from diversified background including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University, University of California Berkeley, Harbin Institute of Technology, panelists gathered Sunday afternoon for detailed discussion on Job Search, Start-up, and MBA Application to share work and life experience.

Panel discussion涉及到如何找工作,为什么申请MBA,以及做创业公司的过程。大家都非常积极踊跃地参与了讨论。
Panel discussion included looking for jobs that fit into your career goals; career development; startup experience; applying to business school MBA, etc.

吴楷亮,范炜和毛辛迪介绍享了他们在经济危机中找工作的经历,并分享了他们成功的经验。
Kailiang, Wei, and Xindi shared their job hunting experience during the economic downturn.

罗超和蒋翊明之前都分别在Bain和Booz & Comapny咨询公司工作过,他们讲述了咨询公司的文化和职场经验,以及决定申请MBA的时间点。
Chao and Yiming had worked in top consulting firms before (Bain, Booz & Company), and they talked about cultural difference in consulting firms, along with what is the best timing for individuals to apply for MBA programs. Yiming also revealed that average age for admitted Sloan MBA students is around 28 with less than 7 years of work experience.

Orbeus团队(王盟,刘天强,孟醒)分享了他们创业公司团队的形成,融资的过程,以及如何解决身份等技术性问题。他们也讨论了以前失败的原因,总结,这次的新团队建设就吸取教训,团队中的人必须各有所长,技能不重叠。
Orbeus, the hot start-up company(Meng Wang, Tianqiang Liu, Xing Meng), generously shared with the audience about the foundation of the company, process of financing at the early stage of the company, and how to start up a company for non U.S. permanent residents /non U.S. citizens. Since this is not their first start-up, based on previous lessons learned, they decided that for this new team, each person should bring unique skills/techniques to the team with no overlap, that way they can make the best use of each team member.

同时大家也讨论了选择大公司还是小公司。大公司在招聘的过程中,对员工某项技能的要求会比较高,而小公司可能就更注重于综合能力和性格是否和团队相符。尤其要和团队能够有共同的方向,这个人的士气或者精神性格等对团队的影响很重要的。
With regards to choose between a small company and a large reputable corporation to start your career, panelists from investment banking/consulting background agreed that in the hiring process, big companies tend to look for the candidates having certain techniques/abilities (for example, knowing how to build a particular data model). However, small companies are more inclined to hire people that are more fit into the corporate culture based on potential candidate’s personality.

在谈到职业规划时,孟醒提到在选择是否进入一个公司的时候,不是一定要往后看很多,如果觉着自己在未来的一年到几年之前想做这份工作,也能通过这份工作实现自己的价值,那就是可以了。因为事情很多变,也许为了就创业,继续深造学习。
In respect to career development, Xing mentioned that think before you decide to accept a job offer is reasonable, but not necessarily to foresee your work in the next 10 years as things can change quickly. You can prove yourself through the work within a year to several years; however,  you may also want to switch the route for some other reasons, like applying to a MBA program, starting your own business, etc.

活动在非常积极热烈地讨论中结束。
This event ended with lively discussion and the networking session was also very successful.
