思源论坛03期: 创业之路 Road to Entrepreneurship

上海交通大学波士顿地区校友会于12/01/2012邀請GL-TURBO公司创建人兼CEO 金华明James Jin先生担任第三届思源论坛嘉宾,分享他创业之路的心路歷程。

James先生于1985年入学上海交通大学,就读于交大第一届试点班,同班同学包括后来成为携程旅行网创建人的沈南鹏. James本科专业为计算机,然而在80年代的中国,计算机专业属于非热门专业.于是在毕业后,James决定选择去美国留学深造,攻读硕士学位.

顺利完成硕士学位之后,James加入了一家名为Fairmarket的公司,与一般在美留学的中国学生不同的是,James选择的是一家处于初步启动,有很大上升空间的小型公司. 加入公司后,James与团队努力拼搏,在短短18个月之内,成功让公司上市.作为公司的工程师总监(Director of Engineering), James对公司的快速成长和成功上市起到了核心的作用. Fairmarket在上市之后被ebay收购,而收购条约之一是要求James在今后的两年之后不能从事相关行业的类似工作。 这对James无疑是很大的挑战。James成功应对挑战,并将之视为人生创业的一大契机——他选择了研发空气压缩机,并创建了现在的GL-TURBO公司。

在James 的带领下,GL-TURBO公司集合了来自于MIT和Northern Research工程公司(Northern Research &   Engineering Corporation) 的专家,专注于设计生产空气压缩机,致力于环境保护和能源节约。 James更放眼中国,认为空气压缩机在中国的市场有很大的机会,其一是现有的国家环境部门的机器需要大幅度更换和整新,这提供了一个很大的需求市场;其二是国家对环境整治的意识日益增强,更建立了很多污水处理厂,而空气压缩机是污水处理的关键环节所需机器。James敏锐地意识到以上两点,并将公司业务带入祖国,并得到了政府的支持。2012年James被评为无锡杰出海归人才,他的公司和技术也得到了无锡市政府的大力支持。GL-TURBO现今在国内外团队总是达到60-70人,其中更包括来自西门子公司的多年技术专家。 James将公司未来的5年计划定位达到$5000,000利润并且成功上市。

James的创业之路来之不易,他也与在场的学子分享了创业的感悟。James认为选择一个合适创业伙伴是最为关键的一点:好的合作伙伴能够起到1+1〉2的作用,如果一个创业的团队充满着拥有一致理念的优秀人才,成功只不过是时间和时机的问题。此外,James也分享了自己如何平衡工作和家庭。很多人常常为了工作冷落了家庭,导致最后的家庭分裂,然而James认为没有什么事情能与家庭的重要性向抗衡,在James的理念中,家庭和事业并不矛盾,反而相辅相成。在如此繁忙的工作重压下,James选择做空中飞人,为的只是一有机会就与家人相处。

James Jin先生是交大人的骄傲,他让我们看到了一个成功的创业者,更难得的是他让我们看到了一个好丈夫好父亲。

 

Siyuan Forum III: Road to Entrepreneurship

We were honored to invite Mr. James Jin, the CEO & Founder of GL-TURBO,LLC.,  as the guest lecturer of Siyuan Forum III “Road to Entrepreneurship” on December 1st 2012. James shared with the audience his stories of entrepreneurship and work experiences.

In 1985, James entered Shanghai Jiaotong University to study Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. He was enrolled in the first SJTU试点班Mr.Nanpeng Shen, the founder of C-trip, was James’s classmate. After college, James went to U.S. for further study and pursued the master degree in computer science in University of Massachusetts in Boston.

Upon the completion of the master’s degree, James joined Fairmarket. Contrary to other Asian students who usually went for middle-large size corporations, James decided to join a small-size and newly-founded company, which was Fairmarket. As the director of engineering, James worked very hard with his team. After merely 18 months, Fairmarket succeeded in going public, which was a goal that could never be realized without James’ contributions. In 2003, Ebay bought Fairmarket for its great potentiality and advanced technology. The successful acquisition brought one condition to James that he could not work in the same industry for at least two years. This was one of the biggest challenges for James by then. However, James managed to turn it into the greatest opportunity in his career: Entrepreneurship.

James founded GL-TURBO, which designs and manufactures high-efficiency centrifugal blowers specifically for the sewage aeration application.GL-BURBO’s principals come from the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the former Northern Research & Engineering Corporation (NREC). Combining over 200 years of experiences in designing and manufacturing compressors, GL-TURBO is dedicated to wastewater treatment and environment protection. James also brings GLT into the Chinese market which he considers having the greatest potentiality. James thinks that the current wastewater treatment machines in China are mostly old and need a great deal of renovations. Meanwhile, the Chinese government is also building more wastewater treatment factories. James realized these would bring the large demands to GLT’s cutting-edge technology of compressors, which motivated him to bring GLT into China. James’s action was supported by Wuxi government. By 2012, James team of aboard and home consist of 60-70 professionals, including experts from Siemens.

It was never an easy road for entrepreneurship, but James made it to the success. In James’s mind, choosing partners who have the same spirit and similar entrepreneurship thoughts are the greatest factors for success. Apart from that, family support is undoubtedly anther success element. Unlike some entrepreneurs who sacrificed family for work, James always set family as the priority and managed to balance career and family. He would fly thousands of miles just to spend a weekend with family, because he thinks it’s worth it.

As SJTUers, we are all proud of Mr. James Jin’s success, not only because he sets a great example of entrepreneur, but also a good example of a father, husband and son.
